RPA UiPath Basics
UiPath is one of the world's most widely used RPA platforms. It provides a full set of tools to design, run, and manage software bots. UiPath's drag-and-drop Studio makes it accessible to people without deep programming backgrounds, while its enterprise features support large-scale deployments.
UiPath offers a free Community Edition that you can download and use to learn and build automations at no cost.
UiPath Product Suite
UiPath is not a single application — it is a suite of products that work together.

UiPath Studio Interface
When you open UiPath Studio, you see a workspace divided into several panels. Each panel serves a specific purpose in building your automation workflow.

Your First UiPath Workflow – Step by Step
Here is how you build a simple automation that opens a browser, goes to a website, and reads the title of the page.
Step 1: Create a New Project
Open UiPath Studio → Click "New Project" → Choose "Process" → Name it "MyFirstBot" → Click Create.
Step 2: Open the Designer
The blank workflow canvas opens. You see a "Start" node at the top. Activities connect downward from this node.
Step 3: Add Activities
Search for "Open Browser" in the Activities panel. Drag it onto the canvas below Start. In the Properties panel on the right, type the URL you want to open — for example, https://www.example.com.
Step 4: Add a Get Title Activity
Search for "Get Title" in the Activities panel. Drag it inside the Open Browser activity. Create a variable called pageTitle and assign it to the Output property of Get Title.
Step 5: Display the Result
Add a "Message Box" activity after the browser activity. Set its Text property to: pageTitle. This will pop up a window showing the page title when the bot runs.
Step 6: Run the Bot
Click the green "Run" button (or press F5). Watch the bot open the browser, load the page, and display the title in a popup.
Key UiPath Concepts
Activities
Activities are the building blocks of every UiPath workflow. Each activity performs one specific action — clicking, typing, reading data, making a decision, or sending an email. You connect activities in a sequence to form the complete automation.
Sequences and Flowcharts
UiPath offers two ways to structure a workflow:
- Sequence: Activities run top to bottom in a straight line. Use this for simple step-by-step tasks.
- Flowchart: Activities connect with arrows and decision diamonds. Use this for complex logic with many branches and conditions.
Variables
Variables store temporary data during the workflow run. For example, a variable called customerName holds "John Smith" while the bot processes John's record, then resets when it moves to the next record.
Common variable types in UiPath: String (text), Integer (whole numbers), Boolean (True/False), DataTable (like a spreadsheet in memory).
Selectors
A selector identifies a specific UI element on the screen. UiPath generates selectors automatically when you use the recording feature or click "Indicate on Screen." A selector looks like an XML tag:
<wnd app='chrome.exe' title='Login - Company Portal' /> <html parentid='shell_transport' tag='INPUT' id='username' />
UiPath Recording Feature
Recording is one of UiPath's most powerful beginner features. You click "Record" and then perform the task manually. UiPath watches your actions and automatically generates the workflow. You can then edit the recorded steps to refine the automation.
Recording Types
| Recording Type | Best Used For |
|---|---|
| Basic | Simple single-window desktop tasks |
| Desktop | Desktop applications (multiple windows) |
| Web | Browser-based tasks |
| Citrix | Virtual environments (no direct UI access) |
UiPath Orchestrator Basics
Once your bot is ready, you publish it to the UiPath Orchestrator — a web portal where you schedule and monitor your bots. From Orchestrator, you can trigger a bot on demand, set it to run daily at a specific time, monitor whether it succeeded or failed, and view detailed logs of every step it executed.
