User experience in AR focuses on how naturally a person can use an app without confusion. This topic covers key principles that keep AR experiences smooth and easy to trust.
Context Awareness
An AR app should react appropriately to its surroundings. A navigation app should avoid placing large arrows over moving cars, and a shopping app should avoid placing furniture models on top of stairs. Good context awareness prevents confusing or unsafe overlaps.
Clear Onboarding
New users often do not know how to scan a room or place an object for the first time. A short guided tutorial that shows a simple animation, such as moving the phone slowly across a table, removes confusion before it happens.

Feedback for Every Action
Give the user a clear signal after each action, such as a small sound or animation when an object gets placed. Feedback confirms the app registered the action and reduces repeated, frustrated taps.
Fail Gracefully
Show a helpful message when surface detection fails instead of leaving the screen blank. A message like "move your phone slowly over a flat surface" guides the user toward a fix instead of leaving them stuck.
Simple Example
Think of AR onboarding like teaching someone to parallel park for the first time. A good instructor gives short, clear steps and confirms each one before moving to the next. A poor instructor gives no guidance and lets the student guess, which usually causes mistakes.
Respecting the User's Physical Space
Avoid asking users to walk into furniture or step outside a safe boundary while focused on a phone screen. Warn users to stay aware of their real surroundings, especially in apps meant for outdoor use.
