jQuery Effects & Animations

Beyond simple hide and show, jQuery provides a collection of built-in effects for creating smooth visual transitions. These include fading, sliding, and a fully customizable animate() method that can animate almost any numeric CSS property.

Fading Effects

Fading effects transition an element's opacity between fully visible and fully transparent.

fadeIn() and fadeOut()

fadeToggle()

$("#popup").fadeToggle(600);    // Fades in if hidden, fades out if visible

fadeTo()

Fades to a specific opacity level (0.0 to 1.0).

Sliding Effects

Sliding effects animate an element's height, making it appear to slide open or closed like a drawer.

The animate() Method

The animate() method can animate any CSS property that has a numeric value (pixel sizes, opacity, margins, padding, etc.).

Syntax

$(selector).animate({ properties }, duration, easing, callback);
  • properties — CSS properties and their target values
  • duration — Speed in ms or "slow"/"fast"
  • easing"swing" (default) or "linear"
  • callback — Runs after animation completes

Note: For position-based animation, the element must have position: relative, absolute, or fixed set in CSS.

Stopping Animations

The stop() method halts a running animation and prevents the queue buildup that occurs when users trigger effects faster than they complete.

The delay() Method

Adds a pause between animations in a queue.

// Show the banner, wait 2 seconds, then fade it out
$("#banner").show().delay(2000).fadeOut("slow");

Queue and Chained Animations

jQuery animations are queued by default — multiple calls execute in order.

The ball moves right, then down, then fades out.
