Canva Elements
Elements are the graphic building blocks inside Canva. This library holds icons, illustrations, charts, and stickers that add visual interest beyond plain text and photos. This topic covers how to find, customize, and use elements without cluttering a design.
The Elements Panel on Screen
The layout guide below shows how the Elements tab groups its content into a searchable grid.

Charts
Frames
The search bar sits at the top of the panel. The row of category labels underneath organizes thousands of available graphics into groups you can browse individually.
Element Categories
The Elements tab groups its content into several types, and each type suits a different design purpose. Browsing by category turns an overwhelming library into a manageable search.
A Simple Way to Picture It
Think of the Elements tab as a craft supply store. One aisle holds stickers, another holds shapes cut from colored paper, another holds small printed charts, and another holds decorative frames. Walking down the correct aisle saves time compared to searching the entire store for one small item.
Category Tree
| Category | Contents |
|---|---|
| Graphics | Illustrations and decorative icons |
| Shapes | Circles, squares, lines, and arrows |
| Charts | Bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs |
| Frames | Containers that hold and crop photos |
| Stickers | Playful animated or static icons |
Searching for an Element
Type a keyword into the Elements search bar, such as "arrow" or "leaf." Canva returns matching graphics instantly. Clicking any thumbnail places it on the current page at a default size, ready for further adjustment.
Customizing an Element
Select a placed element to reveal color and size controls in the toolbar. Many icons support a one-click color change that matches your chosen palette. Dragging the corner handles scales the element up or down to fit the surrounding layout.
Using Charts for Data
Click "Charts" under Elements to insert a bar, line, or pie chart. A data table opens beside the chart, letting you type in numbers and labels directly. The chart updates instantly as you edit the values in the table.
Chart Type Guide
| Chart Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Bar Chart | Comparing values across categories |
| Line Chart | Showing change over time |
| Pie Chart | Showing parts of a whole |
Building Icon Groups
Place several small icons in a row to represent a list of features or steps. Aligning them evenly using the pink guide lines that appear while dragging keeps the spacing consistent across the entire row.
A Practical Walkthrough
A fitness coach builds an infographic listing four workout benefits. She searches "icon" for a heart, a muscle, a clock, and a checkmark, placing one beside each benefit written in a short text box. Aligning the icons in a single row using the guide lines creates a clean, scannable layout for her Instagram post.
Quick Recap

- Search and one-click color changes speed up customizing any element
