Canva Design Sizes
Every design needs the correct pixel dimensions for its intended destination. A wrong size can crop out important content or leave awkward blank space on screen. This topic covers common sizes for digital and print work, along with the tools Canva provides for resizing.
The Custom Size Dialog on Screen
The layout guide below shows the fields you fill in when building a design at an exact size.
Width and height sit in two separate rows, with the unit dropdown directly below them. Confirming the dialog with the button at the bottom opens a blank canvas at those exact measurements.
Why Size Matters
Social platforms and print services expect specific dimensions before accepting a file. An Instagram post cropped incorrectly loses part of its image inside the feed. A flyer sized incorrectly may print with cut-off text along the edges. Setting the right size from the start avoids a frustrating redo later.
A Simple Way to Picture It
Picture a photo frame built for a five by seven inch photo. Sliding a four by six inch photo into that frame leaves gaps on the sides. Sliding an eight by ten inch photo into the same frame forces a crop. Matching the photo size to the frame avoids both problems, and matching a design's pixel size to its platform works the same way.
Common Digital Sizes
| Platform | Design Type | Size in Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Square Post | 1080 x 1080 | |
| Story | 1080 x 1920 | |
| Cover Photo | 820 x 312 | |
| YouTube | Thumbnail | 1280 x 720 |
| Banner | 1584 x 396 |
Common Print Sizes
Print materials use inches instead of pixels, and Canva switches units automatically when you choose a print category from the search results.
| Item | Size in Inches |
|---|---|
| US Letter Document | 8.5 x 11 |
| Business Card | 3.5 x 2 |
| Poster | 18 x 24 |
Resizing an Existing Design
Canva Pro includes a Resize tool under the file menu. Select new dimensions from a list of presets or enter custom values, and Canva rebuilds the layout to fit the new size automatically. Free accounts need to build a fresh design at the new size instead of resizing an existing one.
Resize Tool Flow
| Open File Menu | → | Click Resize | → | Pick New Dimensions | → | Layout Rebuilds |
Choosing Between Landscape and Portrait
A landscape layout suits presentations and banners viewed on wide screens. A portrait layout suits phone screens and printed flyers held vertically in hand. Match the orientation to where your audience will actually view the finished design.
A Practical Walkthrough
A restaurant owner wants the same promotion running as an Instagram post, a Facebook cover, and a printed table tent. She builds the Instagram version first at 1080 by 1080 pixels, uses the Pro Resize tool to generate the Facebook cover version, then starts a fresh custom-size file for the printed table tent using inches instead of pixels.
Sizing for Multiple Devices
A design meant for both desktop and mobile viewing should keep essential text and images near the center of the frame. Content placed too close to the edges risks getting cropped on a narrower phone screen compared to a wide desktop monitor.
Quick Recap
- Correct sizing prevents cropped, stretched, or misaligned designs
- Canva stores presets for major social platforms and standard print formats
- Pro accounts can resize a finished design automatically with the Resize tool
- Orientation choice should match the screen or paper where the design appears
