A style stores a complete formatting recipe, font, size, color, spacing, under one named label such as Heading 1 or Normal. Applying that single style to a paragraph sets every one of those properties at once, replacing several individual clicks with a single choice from the Styles gallery on the Home tab.
Why Styles Matter More Than Manual Formatting
A document formatted manually, paragraph by paragraph, grows inconsistent as a project stretches across many editing sessions. A document built from styles instead stays uniform automatically, since every heading sharing the Heading 1 style updates together the moment that style changes, even in a file hundreds of pages long.
Heading 1 through Heading 9 mark section titles at decreasing importance levels, and also power the automatic Table of Contents feature.

Formatting one paragraph manually, then saving that exact combination as a new named style, lets a learner reuse a custom look repeatedly without rebuilding it from scratch each time. This new style then appears inside the same gallery as the built-in options.
Themes Unify An Entire Document
A theme bundles a coordinated set of colors, heading fonts, and body fonts under one label, reachable from the Layout tab. Switching a theme changes every style built on top of it simultaneously, giving a document a completely new visual identity in a single click without touching individual paragraphs.
Theme Colors Versus Standard Colors
Colors picked from the themed row at the top of a color picker update automatically if the theme changes later, while colors picked from the standard row below stay fixed regardless of theme. Favoring themed colors keeps a document flexible for future rebranding.
A style-based heading also powers an automatic table of contents later, a benefit manual formatting alone cannot provide.
A company color palette and font pairing saved as a custom theme can be reused instantly across every future document.
Style Sets For Whole-Document Looks
A Style Set bundles an entire family of heading and paragraph styles into one cohesive package, switchable from a small gallery beside the theme selector. Choosing a different style set changes spacing, borders, and emphasis patterns across the file at once, giving a fast way to test a completely different visual mood.
