MS Paint Crop and Canvas Size

Crop trims away parts of a picture you do not need. Canvas size changes the space around your drawing. The two ideas sound alike, but they solve different problems, and both help you prepare pictures for sharing.

Crop in Simple Terms

Imagine cutting the edges off a printed photo with scissors. The part inside your cut stays, and the rest goes in the bin. Crop in Paint works the same way. Paint keeps the selected rectangle and discards everything outside it.

Crop versus canvas size Crop: keep the dashed part Canvas size: add space

Crop a Picture

  1. Click the Selection button and choose Rectangle selection.
  2. Drag a box around the part you want to keep.
  3. Click the Crop button in the Image section.
  4. Check the result and save the picture.

The canvas shrinks to match your selection. Press Ctrl and Z to undo when the crop cuts too much.

Why Crop

  • Remove distracting objects from the edges of a photo.
  • Focus attention on a face or a product.
  • Reduce file size for faster emails and uploads.
  • Fit a picture to a required shape, such as a square profile photo.

Canvas Size

The canvas is the working area. Space goes to waste when a small drawing sits on a huge canvas. A big drawing on a tiny canvas gets cut off. Changing the canvas size fixes both cases without stretching your artwork.

Change the Canvas by Dragging

Small handles sit on the right edge, the bottom edge, and the bottom right corner of the canvas. Pull a handle outward to add empty space. Dragging it inward removes space. Paint fills new space with the background color.

Set an Exact Canvas Size

Press Ctrl and E to open Image properties. Type the width and height in pixels. Confirm with OK. Use this method when a project requires exact dimensions, such as 1080 x 1080 for a social media post.

Crop Versus Resize

ResizeScales the whole picture bigger or smaller

Crop for a Perfect Square

Turn on the status bar. Drag a selection and watch the selection size numbers. Stop when the width and height match. Click Crop. The result suits profile pictures and app icons.

Add a Border

Enlarge the canvas by 20 pixels on the right and bottom. Select the whole canvas and add a rectangle outline with no fill. The extra space gives the picture a clean frame.

Common Problems

The Crop Removes Too Much

Undo and draw the selection again. Zoom out so the full picture stays visible while you select.

The New Canvas Space Looks White

Paint fills the new space with the background color. Use Fill with color to paint the space another shade.

The Drawing Moves After Cropping

The top left corner of your selection becomes the new corner of the canvas. Select with care at that corner.

Practice Exercise

Open a group photo and crop it to a single person. Create a new file with a 600 x 600 canvas using Image properties. Draw a smiley face on it and enlarge the canvas to 800 x 600 so the face sits on the left with free space for a caption on the right.
