MS Paint Remove Background
A product photo, a portrait, or a pet picture often looks better without the busy scene behind it. The Remove background tool erases everything except the main subject. A see-through canvas remains, ready for new backdrops, posters, and stickers.
What the Tool Does
Think of cutting a person out of a magazine page with scissors. You keep the person and discard the rest of the page. Paint performs the cutting automatically. Paint studies the picture, finds the subject, and turns the surrounding pixels transparent. A checkerboard pattern shows the see-through area.
Steps to Remove a Background
- Open your picture in Paint with Ctrl and O.
- Look for the Remove background button in the Image section of the toolbar.
- Click the button and wait a moment while Paint works.
- Check the result. The subject should stay sharp, and the old backdrop should show a checkerboard.
- Save the picture as a PNG file to keep the transparent area.
The tool needs a recent version of Paint. Update the program from the Microsoft Store when the button is missing.
Remove the Background from Part of a Picture
Draw a rectangle around the subject with the Rectangle selection tool before you click the button. Paint then focuses on the selected area. This method helps when a picture holds several objects and you want only one of them.
Pictures That Work Best
- A clear subject with sharp edges
- A background that differs in color from the subject
- Even lighting without heavy shadows
- A subject that fills a good part of the frame
Fur, hair, and glass objects challenge the tool, because their edges blend into the backdrop. Expect rough spots in those areas and plan a little cleanup.
Clean Up Rough Edges
Zoom In
Raise the zoom to 400 percent or higher and scan the outline of the subject. Look for leftover pieces of the old background.
Use the Eraser
Choose the Eraser and set a small size. Brush away stray specks. The erased spots turn transparent when the picture has no solid background layer.
Undo When Needed
Press Ctrl and Z to step back after a bad erase. Paint remembers many steps, so you can try again without fear.
Place the Subject on a New Backdrop
Open the new backdrop picture in Paint. Open the cutout in a second window, select all with Ctrl and A, and copy with Ctrl and C. Switch to the backdrop and press Ctrl and V. Drag the cutout to the right spot. Transparent areas let the new scene show through.
Save in the Right Format
PNG keeps transparency. JPEG has no support for see-through pixels, so the transparent area turns into a solid color when you save. Choose PNG whenever you plan to reuse the cutout.
Use Pictures Responsibly
Cut backgrounds only from pictures that you own or have permission to edit. Photos from other people, brands, or websites may carry copyright limits. Original photos taken by you or pictures with a clear reuse license keep your projects safe.
Keep the Original
Save the edited cutout under a new name. The untouched original stays available if you ever need a fresh start.
