MS Paint Rotate and Flip

Photos arrive sideways. Text appears backward. Symmetric designs need a mirror copy. Rotate and Flip solve all three problems in a few clicks. The commands turn the whole picture or just a selected part.

Rotate Versus Flip

Imagine a photo lying on a table. Rotating spins the photo around its center, like turning a steering wheel. Flipping lifts the photo and turns it over, like a pancake in a pan. The picture lands in a new position in both cases, but flipping creates a mirror image, while rotating keeps the original orientation of the details.

The Five Choices

  • Rotate right 90 degrees turns the picture a quarter turn clockwise.
  • Rotate left 90 degrees turns the picture a quarter turn counterclockwise.
  • Rotate 180 degrees turns the picture upside down.
  • Flip vertical swaps the top and the bottom.
  • Flip horizontal swaps the left and the right.

Where to Find the Commands

Look for the Rotate button in the Image section of the toolbar. Click it to open the list of five choices. Pick one and the change appears instantly. Press Ctrl and Z when the result looks wrong.

Rotate the Whole Picture or One Part

Whole Picture

Click Rotate without selecting anything. Paint turns the entire canvas. A 90 degree turn swaps the width and the height, so a wide picture becomes tall.

Selected Part

Choose a Selection tool and draw around the area you want to change. Click Rotate and pick a choice. Only the selected area moves, and the rest of the canvas stays still. A rotated selection that becomes wider than its space may overlap nearby details, so check the edges after each turn.

Fix a Sideways Photo

  1. Open the photo in Paint.
  2. Click Rotate.
  3. Choose Rotate right 90 degrees when the top of the photo points left, or choose Rotate left 90 degrees when the top points right.
  4. Press Ctrl and S to save the corrected picture.

Build a Symmetric Design

Mirror tricks save time. Draw half of a butterfly, a face, or a vase, and let Paint create the other half.

  1. Draw the left half of your design on the canvas.
  2. Select the half with the Rectangle selection tool.
  3. Press Ctrl and C to copy, then Ctrl and V to paste a duplicate.
  4. Choose Rotate, then Flip horizontal, to mirror the duplicate.
  5. Drag the mirrored copy to the right side until the center lines meet.

The method produces clean symmetry that is hard to draw by hand.

Watch Out for Text

Flipping a picture that contains words turns the letters into a mirror image. Rotating by 180 degrees makes words upside down. Add text after you finish rotating and flipping, so the letters stay readable.

Rotation Cannot Use Any Angle

Paint offers quarter turns and a half turn only. A photo tilted by a small angle needs a different program for a precise fix. Many beginners solve small tilts by cropping a straight section out of the photo instead.

Practice Ideas

  • Rotate a postcard-size photo through all four positions and watch the canvas shape change.
  • Flip a drawing of an arrow to point the opposite direction.
  • Create a kaleidoscope pattern by mirroring a small doodle both horizontally and vertically.
