Linear Workspace Setup
Your Linear workspace is the central hub where your entire team works. Setting it up correctly from the start saves time and avoids confusion later. This topic walks through creating an account, configuring your workspace, and inviting teammates.
Create a Linear Account
Visit linear.app and click Sign Up. Linear allows sign-up with a Google account, GitHub account, or email address. Using Google or GitHub is faster because it skips email verification.

Create Your Workspace
A workspace represents your company or organization in Linear. Every person you invite shares this workspace. Choose a clear, recognizable name — your company name works best.
Workspace Setup Fields
| Field | What to Enter | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace Name | Your company or team name | Acme Corp |
| Workspace URL | A short, unique web address | linear.app/acme-corp |
| Your Role | Your job title or function | Product Manager |
| Team Size | Number of people in your org | 10–25 |
The workspace URL becomes the address everyone on your team uses to access Linear. Pick something short and easy to remember. You can change the display name later, but the URL is harder to update once shared.
Workspace Settings
After creating your workspace, open Settings from the left sidebar. The settings area controls everything about how your workspace looks and behaves.
Key Settings to Configure First
| Setting | What It Controls | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace Name | The displayed name across Linear | Use your official company name |
| Workspace Logo | The icon shown in the sidebar | Upload your company logo |
| Allowed Email Domains | Who can join without an invite link | Add your company email domain |
| Default Team | Where new members land on first login | Set to your main team |
| Time Zone | Timestamps across all issues | Set to your primary office location |
Invite Team Members
Go to Settings > Members and click Invite Members. Enter email addresses one at a time or paste a comma-separated list to send multiple invites at once.
Invitation Methods
| Method | Best For | How to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Email Invite | Inviting specific people | Enter email address and click Send |
| Invite Link | Sharing with a group at once | Copy the link and share via Slack or email |
| Domain Allow-list | Letting all company email users join | Enable auto-join for your email domain |
New members receive an email with a login link. They join the workspace directly and land on the default team view. No manual setup is needed on their end.
Member Roles in a Workspace
Linear assigns roles to every workspace member. Roles control what each person can see, change, and manage.

Personal Profile Settings
Click your avatar in the bottom-left corner of Linear to open your personal settings. These settings apply only to your account, not to the whole workspace.
Profile Settings to Update
- Display Name: The name your teammates see on issues you create or update.
- Avatar: Upload a photo to help teammates identify you quickly.
- Notification Preferences: Choose how and when Linear notifies you about activity.
- Theme: Switch between Light, Dark, or System default themes.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Enable or disable shortcut keys based on your workflow.
Workspace vs Personal Settings
| Setting Type | Who It Affects | Where to Find It |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace Settings | All members of the workspace | Settings > Workspace |
| Personal Settings | Only your own account | Your avatar > Profile |
| Team Settings | All members of a specific team | Settings > Teams > [Team Name] |
Workspace admins can update workspace-level settings. Regular members update only their personal profile settings. Team-level settings are managed by team admins.
