Keyboard Shortcuts Windows Accessibility Features

Windows includes a range of built-in accessibility features that help users with visual, motor, hearing, or cognitive needs. Many of these features also benefit anyone who wants faster or more flexible ways to interact with their computer. All of them are keyboard-accessible.

Ease of Access Center

  Win + U       → Opens Accessibility settings (Ease of Access)
                  Here you can enable/configure all features below.

Magnifier

  Win + Plus (+)    → Open Magnifier and zoom in
  Win + Minus (-)   → Zoom out in Magnifier
  Win + Esc         → Close Magnifier

  Magnifier Views (set in Magnifier settings):
  Full screen  → Entire screen zoomed
  Lens         → Magnifying circle follows mouse
  Docked       → Zoomed strip pinned to top/bottom of screen

  Ctrl + Alt + F    → Switch to Full screen mode
  Ctrl + Alt + L    → Switch to Lens mode
  Ctrl + Alt + D    → Switch to Docked mode
  Ctrl + Alt + R    → Resize the Magnifier lens

Narrator — Screen Reader

Narrator reads out text on screen, making Windows accessible for users with visual impairments.

  Win + Ctrl + Enter  → Turn Narrator on or off
  (Once on, use Caps Lock as the "Narrator key")

  Caps Lock + H       → Read current item
  Caps Lock + Space   → Activate selected item (like clicking)
  Caps Lock + Left/Right → Navigate by character
  Caps Lock + Ctrl + Left/Right → Navigate by word
  Caps Lock + F1      → Show Narrator commands list

On-Screen Keyboard

  Win + Ctrl + O    → Open On-Screen Keyboard
                      (a virtual keyboard displayed on screen,
                       clickable with a mouse or touch)

  USE CASES:
  ✔ Physical keyboard is damaged
  ✔ Entering a password on a shared/public screen
  ✔ Touch screen devices without a physical keyboard
  ✔ Users with motor difficulties

Sticky Keys

Sticky Keys allow you to press keyboard shortcuts one key at a time instead of holding multiple keys simultaneously. This helps users who find it difficult to hold two or more keys at once.

  ENABLE: Press Shift key 5 times in a row → Windows asks to turn on
  OR: Win + U → Keyboard → Sticky Keys → Toggle on

  HOW IT WORKS:
  Normal:      Hold Ctrl and press C at the same time
  Sticky Keys: Press Ctrl (release) → Press C → triggers Ctrl + C

  INDICATOR: A small lock appears on taskbar when active.

Filter Keys

Filter Keys ignores brief or repeated keystrokes, helping users who accidentally press keys multiple times or have hand tremors.

  ENABLE: Hold Right Shift for 8 seconds → dialog appears
  OR: Win + U → Keyboard → Filter Keys → Toggle on

  EFFECT:
  Without Filter Keys: press "A" once → types "aaa" (accidental repeats)
  With Filter Keys:    press "A" once → types "a" only (repeats filtered)

Toggle Keys

  ENABLE: Win + U → Keyboard → Toggle Keys → on
  OR hold Num Lock for 5 seconds

  EFFECT: Computer beeps when you press Caps Lock, Num Lock,
  or Scroll Lock — helpful if you often accidentally activate these.

High Contrast Mode

  Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen  → Toggle High Contrast mode

  Non-accessibility use: High contrast themes also help in
  bright rooms or when looking at a screen for many hours.

Closed Captions and Audio Descriptions

  Win + U → Hearing → Captions
  → Shows real-time captions for audio playing on your PC
  → Useful in noisy environments or for hearing-impaired users

  CAPTION STYLE OPTIONS:
  Size, color, background, opacity — all customizable

Mouse Keys — Control Pointer with Numpad

  ENABLE: Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock → Toggle Mouse Keys
  OR: Win + U → Mouse → Mouse Keys

  NUMPAD MOVEMENT (when Mouse Keys is on):
  8 = up       2 = down
  4 = left     6 = right
  7 = up-left  9 = up-right
  1 = dn-left  3 = dn-right
  5 = click    0 = hold click
