Keyboard Shortcuts Zoom In and Zoom Out

Zoom shortcuts let you control how large or small content appears on your screen without changing the actual content itself. A document zoomed to 200% looks bigger but prints at the same size. These shortcuts save your eyes during long reading sessions and help you check fine details in designs or spreadsheets.

Universal Zoom Shortcuts

  WINDOWS / LINUX:
  Zoom In:    Ctrl + Plus (+)    or   Ctrl + scroll wheel up
  Zoom Out:   Ctrl + Minus (-)   or   Ctrl + scroll wheel down
  Reset Zoom: Ctrl + 0 (zero)

  MAC:
  Zoom In:    Cmd + Plus (+)
  Zoom Out:   Cmd + Minus (-)
  Reset Zoom: Cmd + 0

These three shortcuts work in browsers, Microsoft Office apps, Google Workspace, image viewers, and most other software.

How Zoom Levels Work

  125%         Slightly enlarged — comfortable for long reading

  Ctrl + 0 always returns to 100% instantly

Zoom in a Browser

Browser zoom scales all elements on a page — text, images, buttons, and layout all grow or shrink together.

Chrome shows the current zoom level in the address bar when it differs from 100%. Clicking that percentage resets it to 100%, same as Ctrl + 0.

Zoom in Microsoft Word

Word offers both the keyboard zoom and a zoom slider at the bottom-right of the window. View zoom changes how you see the document; it does not change the actual font size or content.

  Ctrl + scroll wheel  → Zoom the view in Word
  Ctrl + ]             → Increase selected text font size
  Ctrl + [             → Decrease selected text font size
  Ctrl + 0             → Reset view zoom to 100%

Zoom in Excel

Spreadsheets with many columns benefit from zooming out to see more data at once.

  WIDE SPREADSHEET STRATEGY:
  100% zoom → See columns A to J
  75%  zoom → See columns A to N  (more visible)
  50%  zoom → See columns A to T  (very compact)

  Ctrl + scroll wheel zooms in/out quickly in Excel.

System-Wide Zoom on Windows — Magnifier

  Win + Plus (+)   → Opens Magnifier and zooms in
  Win + Minus (-)  → Zooms out in Magnifier
  Win + Esc        → Closes Magnifier

  MAGNIFIER MODES:
  Full screen  → Entire screen zoomed
  Lens         → Magnifying window follows cursor
  Docked       → Zoomed strip pinned to top of screen

System-Wide Zoom on Mac

Mac has built-in screen zoom under System Settings → Accessibility → Zoom. Once enabled:

  Option + Cmd + =   → Zoom in (full screen)
  Option + Cmd + -   → Zoom out
  Option + Cmd + 8   → Toggle zoom on/off

Zoom vs Display Scaling

  ZOOM (temporary, per-app):
  Ctrl + Plus → content looks bigger in this app only

  DISPLAY SCALING (permanent, system-wide):
  Windows: Settings → Display → Scale (100%, 125%, 150%)
  Mac: System Settings → Displays → Resolution

  Use zoom for quick, task-specific adjustments.
  Use display scaling to permanently make everything larger.
