Keyboard Shortcuts Mac Spotlight and Search
Spotlight is the Mac's built-in search tool. It finds apps, files, emails, web results, calculations, unit conversions, and system settings — all from a single keyboard shortcut. Most Mac users who discover Spotlight stop using the Dock and Finder as their primary app launchers.

Cmd + Space → Opens Spotlight search bar ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ │ │ 🔍 [Search... ] │ │ │ └──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The Spotlight bar appears in the center of your screen. Start typing immediately — there is no need to click inside it.

Spotlight vs Alfred vs Raycast
Spotlight is built-in and free. Third-party launchers like Alfred and Raycast extend this capability with more powerful search, custom workflows, and integrations. Many power users replace Spotlight with one of these tools.
SPOTLIGHT: Built-in, fast, covers 80% of daily search needs ALFRED: More powerful, clipboard history, custom workflows RAYCAST: Modern interface, extensions, window management For beginners: Spotlight is the right starting point. Advanced users explore Alfred or Raycast after mastering Spotlight.

Cmd + Space is one of the first shortcuts any new Mac user should make automatic. Within one week of using Spotlight to launch every app instead of clicking the Dock, the muscle memory forms — and the Dock becomes a secondary tool you rarely need for app launching.
