Keyboard Shortcuts Mac Switch Apps and Windows
Switching between open apps and windows on a Mac is fast and flexible when you use keyboard shortcuts. The Mac provides multiple methods — a quick toggle between two apps, a visual overview of all open apps, and a way to cycle through windows of the same app — each suited to different situations.
Cmd + Tab — The App Switcher
Cmd + Tab → Hold Cmd, tap Tab to cycle through open apps
→ Release Cmd to switch to the selected app
APP SWITCHER BAR (appears in center of screen):
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ [Safari] [Word] [Excel] [Mail] [Slack] [Finder] │
│ ↑ currently selected (highlighted) │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Tap Tab repeatedly (while holding Cmd) → move right
Add Shift (Cmd + Shift + Tab) → move left
Release Cmd → switch to selected app
Single-Tap Toggle Between Two Apps
Cmd + Tab (single tap, release quickly) → Switches to the LAST used app → Tap again to come back → This is the fastest two-app toggle on Mac EXAMPLE: Working in Word → Cmd + Tab → switches to Safari Done referencing → Cmd + Tab → back to Word Each toggle: ~0.2 seconds
Cmd + ` (Backtick) — Switch Windows Within the Same App
When you have multiple windows open within one app — such as three different Word documents — Cmd + Tab cycles apps but stays on Word. To switch between those three Word windows, use a different shortcut.
Cmd + ` (backtick key, above Tab) → Next window of same app Cmd + Shift + ` → Previous window of same app EXAMPLE (3 Word documents open): Doc1 is active Cmd + ` → switches to Doc2 Cmd + ` → switches to Doc3 Cmd + ` → back to Doc1 The ` key is usually located at the top-left of the keyboard, directly above the Tab key.
Hiding vs Minimizing
Mac distinguishes between hiding an app (making it invisible) and minimizing a window (sending it to the Dock). These behave differently with the app switcher.
MINIMIZE (Cmd + M):
→ Window goes into the Dock as a thumbnail
→ App is still "open" but window is in the Dock
→ Cmd + Tab shows the app but does NOT restore the window
(you must click the window thumbnail in the Dock)
HIDE (Cmd + H):
→ All windows of the app disappear from view
→ App stays in Cmd + Tab switcher
→ Clicking the app in Cmd+Tab OR clicking Dock icon restores it
→ BETTER than Minimize for keeping the switcher functional
Cmd + H → Hide the active app (recommended) Cmd + M → Minimize the active window to Dock Cmd + Option + H → Hide all OTHER apps (focus on current app)
Bringing Back Minimized Windows
If you minimized a window (Cmd + M):
Click the window thumbnail in the Dock
OR: Option + Click on the app's Dock icon
→ Restores all minimized windows of that app
Hold Option and select from Cmd+Tab:
→ When you select a hidden/minimized app in the switcher
and press Option before releasing Cmd,
it restores the app AND its windows
Quit vs Close
Cmd + W → Close the current window (app stays open) Cmd + Q → Quit the entire app (all windows close) On Mac, clicking the red X button closes a window but does NOT quit the app — the app icon stays in the Dock with a dot underneath it. Use Cmd + Q to fully quit.
Quick Reference
ACTION SHORTCUT ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Switch to previous app (toggle) Cmd + Tab (tap) Cycle through all open apps Hold Cmd + tap Tab Cycle backward through apps Cmd + Shift + Tab Switch windows within same app Cmd + ` (backtick) Hide active app Cmd + H Hide all other apps Cmd + Option + H Minimize window to Dock Cmd + M Close current window Cmd + W Quit app entirely Cmd + Q
Cmd + Tab and Cmd + ` together cover every app and window switching scenario on Mac. Use Cmd + Tab to move between apps, and Cmd + ` to move between multiple windows inside the same app. Combine these with Cmd + H for hiding (instead of minimizing) and your Mac desktop will feel organized and effortless to navigate.
