Keyboard Shortcuts Mac Mission Control and Spaces

Mission Control is the Mac's overview mode — it shows all open windows and Spaces (virtual desktops) at once so you can see and navigate your entire workspace. Combined with Spaces, it lets you organize your work into separate desktops, each with its own set of apps and windows.

Opening Mission Control

  Ctrl + Up Arrow          → Open Mission Control
  Three-finger swipe up    → Open Mission Control (trackpad)
  F3 (on some keyboards)   → Open Mission Control

Mission Control shows all your open windows spread across the screen, with the Spaces bar at the top showing each virtual desktop.

  IN MISSION CONTROL:
  Arrow keys     → Navigate between windows
  Enter          → Switch to the selected window
  Esc            → Exit Mission Control without switching
  Click + drag   → Move a window from one Space to another

Spaces — Virtual Desktops on Mac

  Create new Space:   Click the + button in the Spaces bar
                      (top-right in Mission Control)

  Switch Spaces:
  Ctrl + Left Arrow   → Move to the Space on the left
  Ctrl + Right Arrow  → Move to the Space on the right

  Ctrl + 1            → Jump directly to Space 1
  Ctrl + 2            → Jump directly to Space 2
  ...and so on (enable in System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts)

Full-Screen Apps and Spaces

When you make an app full screen on Mac (by clicking the green button or pressing Ctrl + Cmd + F), it becomes its own Space in the Spaces bar.

  Navigate to it:  Ctrl + Right/Left Arrow
  Exit full screen: Ctrl + Cmd + F  (toggles in/out of full screen)

App Exposé — See All Windows of One App

  Ctrl + Down Arrow    → Show all windows of the ACTIVE app
                         (called App Exposé)
  Three-finger swipe down → Same action on trackpad

  EXAMPLE (three Safari windows open):
  Press Ctrl + Down while Safari is active:

  Click any thumbnail to switch to that window.

Show Desktop

  Fn + F11             → Show Desktop (hide all windows)
  Cmd + Mission Ctrl   → Spread windows to see the Desktop
                         (the desktop shows through the gaps)

Moving Windows Between Spaces

  METHOD 1: Drag via Mission Control
  Open Mission Control (Ctrl + Up)
  Drag a window thumbnail to a different Space at the top
  Release — window moves to that Space

  METHOD 2: Right-click window in Dock
  Right-click the app's Dock icon
  → Options → Assign to → Desktop (number)
  → App will always open in that Space

  METHOD 3: Move via Mission Control + Option
  In Mission Control, hold Option while dragging
  to copy (rather than move) a window to another Space

Practical Spaces Organization

  EXAMPLE SETUP — 3 Spaces:

  Space 1 (Work):
  Word, Excel, Outlook, work browser tabs

  Space 2 (Research):
  Browser with research tabs, PDF reader, notes app

  Space 3 (Personal):
  Music, personal browser, messaging

  Navigate: Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2, Ctrl + 3
  (Enable numbered shortcuts in Keyboard settings first)

Mission Control and Spaces work best together. Create two or three Spaces for different contexts — work, personal, and research — and use Ctrl + Arrow to switch between them. Once this setup becomes a habit, the feeling of having "separate desks" for different tasks on one computer makes complex workdays considerably easier to manage.
