Keyboard Shortcuts Gmail Inbox and Compose

Gmail has an extensive set of keyboard shortcuts that make managing a busy inbox fast and efficient. These shortcuts require keyboard shortcuts to be enabled in Gmail Settings first. Once enabled, they transform Gmail from a click-heavy experience into a keyboard-driven workflow.

Enable Gmail Shortcuts First

STEP 1: Click the gear icon (top-right) → "See all settings"
STEP 2: General tab → "Keyboard shortcuts" → select "On"
STEP 3: Click "Save Changes" at the bottom

Without this, most Gmail shortcuts will not work.

Composing Email

C → Compose new email (opens compose window)
Ctrl + Enter → Send email (in compose window)
  Ctrl + Shift + C → Add CC recipients
  Ctrl + Shift + B → Add BCC recipients
Tab (in compose) → Move between To, Subject, Body fields
Ctrl + Shift + D → Discard draft (closes and deletes draft)
Ctrl + Shift + P → Preview email before sending (toggle)

Replying and Forwarding

  R → Reply (to sender)
  A → Reply All
  F → Forward email

These single-key shortcuts work when an email is open or selected.
  Compare: R / A / F vs. clicking Reply/Reply All/Forward buttons.

The J and K shortcuts for moving between emails are the habit that changes everything about using Gmail. Combined with E to archive each email after reading, the workflow of J → read → E → J → read → E lets you process an entire inbox without touching the mouse. Inbox Zero becomes achievable in minutes instead of hours of clicking.
