PowerPoint Morph Transition
Morph compares the contents of two consecutive slides and automatically animates any objects that appear on both. If a circle is large and centred on slide 5 and smaller in the corner on slide 6, Morph animates the circle shrinking and moving as you advance — no manual animation setup required. The result looks like a custom-built animation but takes seconds to create.
Think of Morph as a shape-shifting transition. Two slides become frames of an animation — Morph fills in all the in-between movement automatically, the same way a flip-book creates motion from still drawings.
Setting Up a Morph Transition
Morph requires two slides with shared objects. The simplest setup: duplicate an existing slide, then move, resize, or recolour elements on the duplicate. Apply Morph to the second slide via Transitions → Morph. When you advance from slide one to the duplicate, PowerPoint morphs every element from its original state to its new state on the copy.
Design Slide A
Place all objects in their starting positions. This is the "before" state of your animation.
Duplicate the Slide
Right-click the slide thumbnail and choose Duplicate Slide, or press Ctrl+D. The copy becomes Slide B.
Modify Objects on Slide B
Move, resize, recolour, rotate, or delete objects. Each change becomes part of the Morph animation.
Apply Morph to Slide B
Select Slide B, click Transitions → Morph. The transition is now set on the destination slide.
Preview the Result
Click Preview or press Shift+F5 from Slide A to watch the Morph play. Adjust object positions on Slide B to fine-tune the animation.
Morph Effect Options
Click Transitions → Effect Options after applying Morph. Three modes control which elements PowerPoint matches between slides. Objects matches elements by their type and position — the default. Words morphs text word by word — each word floats to its new position independently. Characters morphs letter by letter — creates striking typographic animations as text rearranges character by character.
Using !! Naming for Precise Matching
By default, Morph matches objects by their type and approximate position. When two shapes of the same type appear on both slides and you want to control which matches which, name them using the !!prefix convention. Open the Selection Pane (Home → Arrange → Selection Pane), double-click an object's name, and rename it starting with !! — for example "!!circle-main". Give the corresponding object on the other slide the exact same name. Morph now forces these two to morph into each other regardless of position or size.
Place a small version of a diagram in the corner of Slide A. Duplicate the slide, scale the diagram to fill the entire Slide B canvas, and apply Morph. When you advance, the diagram dramatically zooms in — creating a cinematic focus effect that takes 30 seconds to set up and impresses every audience.
Morphing Text
Text in identically-named placeholders morphs between slides — characters dissolve and float to their new positions. To morph a title changing from one phrase to another, the text box must be the same placeholder on both slides (not a copied text box). Changing the text inside a title placeholder on the duplicate slide creates a word-level or character-level morph depending on the Effect Options setting.
Combining Morph with Regular Animations
Morph handles the movement between slides. Regular object animations handle entrance, exit, and emphasis effects within a single slide. Both systems work simultaneously — a slide can have Morph bringing objects from the previous slide while additional object animations fire after the Morph completes. Use the Animations tab to add object animations that trigger After Previous — they play after the Morph transition finishes landing.
Morph requires Microsoft 365 or PowerPoint 2019 and later. Presentations using Morph saved as .pptx open correctly on older versions, but the Morph transition is replaced by a simple cut — objects jump instantly to their new positions rather than animating smoothly. Test on the presentation venue computer if version compatibility is uncertain.
