Slack Reply in Thread vs Channel

Every time you reply to a message, Slack asks you to make a choice: reply in the thread (private to thread followers) or also share the reply to the channel (visible to everyone). Understanding this distinction prevents miscommunication and keeps channels organized.

The Two Reply Destinations

When to Reply in Thread Only

Choose thread-only replies for the majority of your responses. Thread-only replies suit conversations where the back-and-forth is specific to a few people or where the update is a small detail inside a bigger topic.

Thread-only replies generate notifications only for people already following the thread. Channel-level copies generate notifications for everyone who would normally see a message in that channel.
