Slack Understanding Workspaces
A workspace is the foundation of everything in Slack. Every channel, message, file, and member lives inside a workspace. Understanding what a workspace is — and how it relates to the rest of Slack — makes everything else click into place.
What a Workspace Is
A workspace is a private environment that belongs to one organization, company, team, or community. Think of it as a dedicated building for your group. Everyone inside the building shares the same hallways (channels), but people outside cannot walk in without an invitation.

Workspace Web Address
Every workspace has a unique web address. When your workspace is named "Acme Corp", Slack creates the address acmecorp.slack.com. Members bookmark this address or use the desktop app to sign in. The address is permanent — it does not change unless the workspace owner renames it.
Who Manages a Workspace
Every workspace has at least one owner and can have multiple admins. Here is how those roles work:
WORKSPACE HIERARCHY
👑 Workspace Owner
│
├── Creates and deletes the workspace
├── Controls all settings
└── Can transfer ownership
🛡️ Workspace Admins (can be multiple)
│
├── Invite and remove members
├── Manage channels
└── Adjust most settings
👤 Regular Members
│
├── Send messages
├── Join public channels
└── Use approved apps
A fresh workspace starts with you as both owner and the only admin. As your team grows, you promote trusted members to admin to share the management work.
Workspace vs Channel: What Is the Difference
New users often confuse workspaces with channels. The distinction is simple:
- A workspace holds everything — all channels, all members, all files.
- A channel is a single conversation room inside the workspace.
WORKSPACE → CHANNELS (one workspace contains many channels)

Free Workspace Limits
On the free Slack plan, your workspace has these limits:
- Message history: 90 days of searchable messages.
- App integrations: Up to 10 apps connected.
- Storage: 5 GB across the whole workspace.
- Video calls: One-on-one only.
Older messages do not disappear — they just become unsearchable. Upgrading to a paid plan restores access to the full history.

Belonging to Multiple Workspaces
One Slack account can belong to many workspaces. If you freelance for two clients who both use Slack, you switch between their workspaces from the left sidebar in the desktop or mobile app. Each workspace stays completely separate — messages and files in one workspace never appear in another.

How to Create a New Workspace
- Go to slack.com/create.
- Enter your email address and verify it.
- Type a name for your workspace (your company or team name).
- Slack generates a workspace URL from the name.
- Invite teammates by email.
You can also click the "+" icon at the bottom of the workspace switcher in the sidebar and choose "Create a new workspace."
Workspace Settings You Should Know
As a member, you can view workspace settings by clicking your workspace name at the top of the sidebar. As an admin or owner, you control settings like:
- Who can invite new members
- Whether joining is open to anyone with a company email
- How long messages and files are retained
- Which apps members can install
Workspace settings shape the entire team experience, so admins should review them carefully when setting up a new workspace.
