Slack Schedule a Status
Scheduling a status means your status appears and clears automatically at specific times — no manual action needed. If you take the same lunch break every day, go offline at 6 PM, or have a weekly all-hands meeting every Monday, a scheduled status handles the communication for you every single time.
Why Schedule a Status
WITHOUT SCHEDULED STATUS WITH SCHEDULED STATUS ──────────────────────────── ───────────────────────────────── Manually set status each day Status appears automatically Forget to clear it → teammates Clears on schedule → no stale see stale "In a meeting" hours "In a meeting" at 8 PM after your meeting ended Inconsistent → colleagues Predictable → colleagues learn never know your real pattern your availability pattern
How to Schedule a Status
Slack's built-in status tool lets you set expiry times, but for true recurring schedules, you combine Slack's status with Workflow Builder or use Slack's notification schedule alongside your status expiry settings.
Option 1: Manual Status with Smart Expiry
The simplest approach for most users — set your status with a precise expiry:
- Click your profile photo → "Update your status".
- Enter your status text and emoji.
- In the "Clear after" dropdown, select the exact time or duration.
- Click Save.
The status clears automatically at the chosen time. Set it each morning as part of your startup routine and let Slack handle the rest.
SMART EXPIRY STRATEGY
8:00 AM: Set status "🖥️ Available — working hours"
Expiry: Today at 6:00 PM
↓
6:00 PM: Status clears automatically
↓
8:00 AM next day: Set it again
Option 2: Workflow Builder Automation
For recurring scheduled statuses, Workflow Builder automates the process. You build a workflow that triggers at a specific time and uses the "Update your status" Slack action.
- Open Tools → Workflow Builder from the sidebar.
- Click "New workflow".
- Choose the trigger: "At a scheduled time".
- Set the day and time (e.g., every Monday at 10 AM).
- Add a step: "Update your status".
- Enter the status text, emoji, and expiry.
- Add a second step to clear the status at the end time if needed.
- Publish the workflow.
EXAMPLE AUTOMATED WORKFLOW
TRIGGER: Every Monday, 10:00 AM
↓
ACTION: Set status to "📊 Weekly all-hands"
Clear after 2 hours
↓
12:00 PM: Status clears automatically ✓
Connecting to Your Calendar
When you connect your Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar to Slack (covered in the integrations topics), Slack reads your calendar events and updates your status automatically. During a calendar event, your status changes to "🗓️ In a meeting" and clears when the event ends.
CALENDAR-DRIVEN STATUS
Google Calendar event: "Design Review"
10:00 AM → 11:00 AM
↓
Slack status automatically becomes:
🗓️ In a meeting [10:00 AM – 11:00 AM]
↓
11:00 AM: Status clears → back to default ✓
This is the most powerful scheduling approach because it stays in sync with your actual schedule without any manual input.
Vacation and Out-of-Office Status
For multi-day absences, set a status with a long expiry date:
- Set status: 🌴 On vacation — back Oct 20
- Expiry: Choose a custom date (Oct 20).
- Save.
The status stays active for your entire vacation and clears the day you return. Teammates immediately know your return date without sending a message.
