Slack Connect Overview

Slack Connect lets you communicate with people outside your organization — clients, partners, vendors, or freelancers — using Slack. Instead of emailing back and forth with people at other companies, you share a Slack channel with them. Both sides use their own Slack workspaces and see the same conversation in real time.

The Problem Slack Connect Solves

WITHOUT SLACK CONNECT

  Your Company Client Company
  ───────────── ──────────────────
  Slack (fast) Email (slow)

You: "File is ready!" → sends email
They see it hours later, reply by email
You get email, go back to Slack
Conversation spans two tools ← confusing

WITH SLACK CONNECT

  Your Company Client Company
  ───────────── ──────────────────
  #ext-acme-corp ←────→ #ext-acme-corp
  (shared channel) (same channel)

Same conversation, both sides in Slack
No email needed, replies in seconds ✓

How Slack Connect Works

Slack Connect creates a bridge between two workspaces. A shared channel appears in both workspaces simultaneously. Members from both organizations post into the same thread. Each organization's workspace admins control who from their side can participate.

  #🔗 ext-client ←────────→ #🔗 ext-acme
  # dev-team # design

What You Can Do in a Shared Channel

  • Send messages, files, and links — just like any normal channel.
  • React to messages with emoji.
  • Use threads to keep conversations organized.
  • Start Huddles with external participants.
  • Share Google Drive, Dropbox, or other cloud file links.
  • Mention external teammates with @name.

What You Cannot Do in a Shared Channel

  • External members cannot see your other channels.
  • You cannot install apps on the shared channel from the other side.
  • Message retention and compliance rules from both workspaces apply.
  • Slack Connect channels require paid plans on at least one side.

Slack Connect vs Email: Why It Wins for Partnerships

EMAIL SLACK CONNECT
────────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────────
One-to-one threads Full team visible in one channel
Files lost in inboxes Files pinned, searchable
Days to resolve questions Minutes to resolve questions
No shared history for new members New joiner reads full channel history
Hard to know if message was seen Read receipts, reactions confirm it
Multiple email chains per topic One channel per topic

Slack Connect for DMs

Beyond shared channels, Slack Connect also supports direct messages between people at different companies. If both parties use Slack, you can send a direct message invitation to someone at another organization. When they accept, you share a DM thread — no email required.

SLACK CONNECT DM FLOW

You (at Acme) want to message Bob (at Client Co.)
         ↓
Go to New Message → type Bob's work email
         ↓
  Slack sends Bob an invitation
         ↓
Bob accepts → shared DM opens between you two ✓

Plan Requirements

PLAN SLACK CONNECT AVAILABILITY

Security and Trust

Slack Connect is designed with security controls. Both workspace admins must approve a shared channel connection before it goes live. Admins control which members can send or receive Slack Connect invitations. Messages in shared channels follow both organizations' data retention policies — the stricter of the two policies typically governs.
