Slack Invite External Users

Bringing people from outside your organization into Slack is straightforward, but there are two distinct methods — each suited to a different situation. You can invite someone as a guest (limited access inside your workspace) or connect through Slack Connect (shared channel across two workspaces). Choosing the right method protects your workspace while keeping collaboration smooth.

Two Ways to Bring in External People

METHOD 1: GUEST ACCOUNT METHOD 2: SLACK CONNECT

Inviting a Guest to Your Workspace

A guest is someone outside your company who gets access to your Slack workspace with limited permissions. There are two guest types:

SINGLE-CHANNEL GUEST
→ Access to ONE channel only
→ Cannot see any other channels
→ Cannot see member list of other channels
→ Free on paid plans (unlimited single-channel guests)

MULTI-CHANNEL GUEST
→ Access to MULTIPLE specified channels
→ Still cannot see all workspace channels
→ Billed as a paid seat on most plans

How to Invite a Guest

  1. Click your workspace name at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Select "Invite people to [workspace name]".
  3. Enter the external person's email address.
  4. Under the invite type, select "Guest".
  5. Choose Single-channel or Multi-channel.
  6. Select which channel(s) they can access.
  7. Set an expiry date for the guest account (optional but recommended).
  8. Click Send Invite.
GUEST INVITE FLOW

  Admin sends invite to: contractor@freelance.com

Contractor receives email → joins Slack

All other channels invisible to them ✓

Sending a Slack Connect Invitation

For an external partner who has their own Slack workspace, use Slack Connect instead of a guest account. This lets them participate without creating an account in your workspace.

  1. Create a channel for the shared collaboration (e.g., #ext-partner-xyz).
  2. Open the channel and click "Invite" or find the Slack Connect option.
  3. Enter the external person's work email address or their workspace's Slack name.
  4. Slack sends an invitation to that person's Slack workspace admin.
  5. Their admin approves → the channel becomes shared.

Guest Permissions Compared to Full Members

Setting Guest Account Expiry

Always set an expiry date when inviting a guest for a time-limited project. When the date arrives, Slack automatically deactivates the guest account. The guest can no longer log in, and your workspace stays clean without manual cleanup.

EXPIRY EXAMPLE

Contractor works on project through Dec 31
  Guest account expires: Dec 31

  Jan 1: Account deactivated automatically
Jan 1: Their messages still visible in channel
Jan 1: They cannot log in or view the channel ✓

Revoking Guest Access Early

If a project ends early or you need to remove a guest before their expiry date:

  1. Click your workspace name → Settings & administration → Manage members.
  2. Find the guest in the member list.
  3. Click Deactivate account.
  4. Confirm the deactivation.

The guest immediately loses access. Their messages and files in the channel remain visible to current members.

Plan Requirement for Guests

PLAN GUEST ACCOUNT SUPPORT
──────────── ──────────────────────────────────────────────────
Free No guest accounts
Pro Single-channel guests (free), multi-channel (paid)
Business+ Full guest support with admin controls
Enterprise Full guest support + compliance controls

Key Takeaways

  • Guests join your workspace with limited access — choose single-channel or multi-channel guest.
  • Slack Connect is better than guest accounts when the external person has their own Slack workspace.
  • Always set an expiry date on guest accounts to automate cleanup when projects end.
  • Guest accounts require a paid Slack plan — free workspaces cannot invite guests.
  • Deactivate a guest early from Settings → Manage members if they leave the project ahead of schedule.
