Slack Connect Google Drive

Connecting Google Drive to Slack lets you share, preview, and manage Google files directly inside your conversations. When you paste a Google Drive link, Slack shows a rich preview with the file name and type. When you are notified about a file, you open it with one click — no switching tabs, no hunting through Drive.

What the Google Drive Integration Does

WITHOUT GOOGLE DRIVE INTEGRATION

  "Here's the report: https://docs.google.com/..."
→ Teammates see a raw URL
→ Must click, sign in to Drive, then view

How to Connect Google Drive to Slack

  1. In the left sidebar, click Apps.
  2. Search for "Google Drive" in the App Directory.
  3. Click "Add to Slack".
  4. Click "Allow" to authorize the connection.
  5. Slack opens a window asking you to sign in to your Google account.
  6. Select your Google account and click "Allow" to grant permissions.
  7. Done — Google Drive is now connected to your Slack account.

Sharing Files from Google Drive in Slack

Two ways to share Google Drive files:

Method 1: Paste the Link

Copy the sharing link from Google Drive and paste it directly into any Slack channel or DM. Slack auto-unfurls it into a preview card with the file name, type, and a direct open button.

Method 2: Use the Drive Icon in the Input Box

  1. Click the + icon in the message input toolbar.
  2. Select "Google Drive".
  3. Browse or search your Drive files in the picker that appears.
  4. Select a file and click Share.

Google Drive Notifications in Slack

After connecting, the Google Drive bot in Slack notifies you when:

  • Someone shares a Drive file with you.
  • Someone comments on a file you own or follow.
  • Someone requests access to your file.
GOOGLE DRIVE BOT DM EXAMPLE

  📁 Google Drive
  "Alice commented on your document:
   Q3 Marketing Report
'Can you add a section on social results?'
   [Open in Google Docs]"

These notifications keep you informed without checking Google Drive manually throughout the day.

File Permissions Still Apply

Sharing a Google Drive link in Slack does not automatically grant everyone in the channel access to the file. Google Drive's own sharing settings control who can view or edit. If a teammate clicks the link and sees "Permission denied," ask the file owner to adjust sharing in Google Drive.

PERMISSION CHECK

File set to "Restricted" in Drive:
→ Only specific people can open it
→ Others click the Slack link and see "Request access"

File set to "Anyone with the link":
→ All Slack channel members can open it immediately ✓

Disconnecting Google Drive

To remove the integration, go to Apps → Google Drive → Remove App. Slack loses the ability to unfurl Drive links and you stop receiving Drive notifications in Slack. Previously posted file previews remain visible in channels.

Key Takeaways

  • Install the Google Drive app from the Slack App Directory and sign in with your Google account.
  • Paste any Google Drive link in Slack to generate an automatic file preview card.
  • Use the + icon in the message input box to browse and share Drive files directly.
  • The Google Drive bot notifies you in Slack about comments, shares, and access requests.
  • Google Drive sharing permissions still control who can open the file — Slack does not bypass them.
