What Is a File
A File Stores Information
A file is a collection of information saved on a computer. Every piece of work you create — a drawing, a story, a photo — gets saved as a file. Files stay on the computer even after you switch it off.
Example
Think of a file like a page in your exercise book. The page holds your written work. A computer file holds digital work — words, pictures, or music — instead of ink on paper.
Every File Has a Name
Each file gets a filename so you can find it later. A filename has two parts separated by a dot. The part before the dot is the name you choose. The part after the dot is called the extension — it tells the computer what type of file it is.
📄 How a Filename Works
Common File Types
Different types of files use different extensions. The extension tells the computer which program to use to open the file.

How Big Is a File?
Files take up space on the computer's storage. We measure this space in units. A small text file is just a few kilobytes (KB). A photo is a few megabytes (MB). A long video is several gigabytes (GB).
📈 File Size Comparison
Text file (.txt) — a few KB
Photo (.jpg) — a few MB
Video (.mp4) — several GB
