Save and Open Files
Why Saving Matters
When you work on a computer, your work lives in temporary memory. If the computer switches off before you save, your work disappears. Saving copies your work to permanent storage so it stays safe.
Example
Writing in a word processor without saving is like writing on a whiteboard — when someone cleans the board, everything vanishes. Saving is like writing in an exercise book — the work stays there even after class ends.
How to Save a File
You save using the Ctrl + S shortcut or through the File menu. The computer asks you to choose a name and location for the file the very first time you save it.
💾 Steps to Save a New File
| 1 | Press Ctrl + S (hold Ctrl, tap S) |
| 2 | A window appears asking for a filename |
| 3 | Type a clear name (e.g. my_story_class1) |
| 4 | Choose a folder location, then click Save |
Ctrl + S
Save the file
Ctrl + Z
Undo last action
Ctrl + P
Print the file
How to Open a Saved File
To open a file, find it in its folder and double-click it. The computer starts the right program automatically and loads your file. You can also use Ctrl + O inside a program to browse and open a file.
📁 Steps to Open an Existing File
| 1 | Open the folder where you saved the file |
| 2 | Find the file by its name |
| 3 | Double-click the file icon |
| 4 | The file opens in its program, ready to use |
Save Often — Every Few Minutes
Many students lose work because they forget to save. Make it a habit to press Ctrl + S every few minutes while you work. This way, even a sudden power cut cannot destroy your work.
