Copy, Cut and Paste

Copy, Cut, and Paste are three of the most useful skills on a computer. You use them to move or duplicate text, files, and images without retyping or redrawing anything.

The Three Actions Explained

📋Copy

Makes a duplicate. The original stays where it is.

Ctrl + C
✂️Cut

Removes the item from its place, ready to move.

Ctrl + X
📌Paste

Places the copied or cut item in a new location.

Ctrl + V

How to Copy a File in File Explorer

1
Click the file once to select it.
2
Press Ctrl + C to copy it (or Ctrl + X to cut).
3
Open the folder where you want to put the file.
4
Press Ctrl + V to paste it there.
💡 When you cut and paste a file, it moves. When you copy and paste, two copies exist — the original stays and a new one appears in the new location.

Quick Exercise

Q1. Which shortcut pastes something you copied?
Ctrl + V. Always paste after you copy (Ctrl+C) or cut (Ctrl+X).
Q2. You move a file using Cut and Paste. Does the original file stay?
No. Cut removes the file from the original location and places it in the new one.
Q3. What is the first step before you can copy or cut anything?
✅ You must select it first — click the text or file to highlight/select it, then copy or cut.
