6 Golden Rules for Organising Files

1️⃣
Give every file a clear, meaningful name. "Science Report Term 2" is better than "doc1".
2️⃣
Group related files into folders by subject or project.
3️⃣
Create sub-folders inside main folders to break things down further.
4️⃣
Delete files you no longer need — empty the Recycle Bin regularly.
5️⃣
Keep your Desktop clear — use it only for things you are working on today.
6️⃣
Save your work often with Ctrl + S so you never lose it.
💡 Use dates in file names when making different versions. Example: "Essay_Jan2025.docx" and "Essay_Feb2025.docx". You always know which is newer.

Quick Exercise

Q1. Which file name is better — "doc1.docx" or "Science_Report_Term2.docx"? Why?
Science_Report_Term2.docx. It tells you exactly what the file contains without opening it.
Q2. What should you do with files you no longer need?
Delete them and then empty the Recycle Bin. This frees up space on your computer.
Q3. Your Desktop has 40 random files on it. What is the best way to tidy it?
✅ Create folders by subject or type, move the files into the correct folders, then delete anything you no longer need.
