The spacebar is pressed after every single word — roughly 20% of all keystrokes in normal English text are spaces. Most people use their right thumb by default, though some alternate thumbs. The crucial habit: press the spacebar immediately after the last letter of each word, never pause before it.

The Shift key creates capital letters and accesses the symbols on the number row (!, @, #, $…) and on punctuation keys. The golden rule is always to use the opposite hand's Shift key: hold Right Shift with your right pinky while pressing a left-hand letter, and Left Shift for a right-hand letter. This keeps both hands balanced.

⇧ The Opposite-Hand Shift Rule

Capital A (left hand): hold Right Shift (right pinky) + press A (left pinky). Capital P (right hand): hold Left Shift (left pinky) + press P (right pinky). Never twist one hand to do both jobs at once.

💡 Caps Lock vs Shift

Use Caps Lock only for typing multiple capitals in a row (acronyms, ALL-CAPS headings). For a single capital letter at the start of a word or sentence, always use Shift — it's one keystroke versus three (on, letter, off) for Caps Lock.

⌨️ Capitals & Spacebar Practice

These passages use proper nouns, sentence-opening capitals, and the pronoun I — all requiring Shift. Focus on zero hesitation before and after each capital letter.

✅ Key Takeaways

Press the spacebar immediately after every word — no pause. Use the opposite hand's Shift for every capital. Shift is for one capital; Caps Lock is for many. These two habits — instant space and opposite-hand shift — add 5–10 WPM to most people's speed within a week.
