Typing Advanced Speed
⚙️ Settings
Sixty words per minute is the threshold that separates competent typists from proficient ones. Below 60 WPM, typing is a task you consciously manage. Above 60 WPM, typing becomes transparent — your fingers express your thoughts without a conscious keyboard translation step. Reaching this level requires moving beyond letter-by-letter awareness to whole-word and even whole-phrase awareness.
At the advanced level every gained WPM requires more deliberate effort than the last. Going from 20 to 40 WPM happens quickly with basic practice. Going from 40 to 60 requires identifying and eliminating specific bottlenecks. Going from 60 to 80 demands systematic training of your weakest key transitions — the three or four pairs of keys that your fingers hesitate on most.
🧩 Phrase Chunking
Instead of reading word by word, advanced typists load entire phrases — "in order to", "as well as", "on the other hand" — as single motor units. When your fingers encounter a familiar phrase they execute it as one fluid motion without the micro-pauses between words that slow beginners down. Build your phrase library by practising common English collocations until they feel like single keystrokes.
🔄 The 110% Rule
To raise your cruise speed to X WPM, you need burst capability at 110% of X. If your target is 60 WPM, practise bursts at 66 WPM. This headroom makes cruise speed feel effortless rather than strained. Combine burst training with long-form sustained tests for maximum improvement across both peak and average speed.

✅ Key Takeaways
60 WPM is the professional threshold. Advanced speed needs phrase chunking, 110% burst training, and weak-key targeting. The pace tracker shows whether you are ahead or behind your target in real time. Track session history to measure monthly progress.
