Typing Without Looking

Touch typing means typing without ever looking at the keyboard. Your eyes stay on the screen at all times. Your fingers navigate purely by muscle memory — the key positions are stored in your hands, not retrieved by looking. If you have been practising all previous topics correctly, your fingers already know where every key is. This topic challenges you to trust that knowledge completely.

Every time you look down at the keyboard, you lose your place on the screen. Your eyes have to travel down, find the key, travel back up, and relocate your position in the text. This round trip takes between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds. A typist who looks down even ten times per minute loses 5–15 seconds of typing time — enough to cost 4–12 words of output.

🏠 Trust the Bumps

Your F and J keys have raised bumps. Place your index fingers on them with your eyes closed right now. Feel that you are correctly positioned. Now type A S D F J K L without looking. You just proved your fingers already know the way. That same faith is all touch typing requires — applied to the whole keyboard.

👁 The Cover Technique

To break the look-down habit, place a book or folder over your hands while typing. The physical barrier makes it impossible to look. The discomfort you feel in the first session is exactly the feeling of a new automatic habit forming. Most people break the look-down habit completely within three to five covered sessions.

✅ Key Takeaways

Touch typing means never looking at the keyboard. Every look-down costs 0.5–1.5 seconds. The F and J bumps are your permanent navigation system. The cover technique breaks the look-down habit within 3–5 sessions. Once touch typing becomes automatic, your screen reading speed equals your typing speed — a massive productivity gain.
