Typing Speed Intro
⚙️ Settings
Words Per Minute (WPM) is the global standard for measuring typing speed. One word equals five characters including spaces — so "hello " = 1 word. The formula: WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Gross WPM counts everything typed. Net WPM subtracts error penalties. Net WPM is what exams and employers actually use.
Average typing speeds range from 40 WPM for a typical office worker to 60–80 WPM for a proficient typist. Government exam minimums in India range from 25 WPM (basic clerk) to 40 WPM (court typist). Your first target is 30 WPM with 95% accuracy — achievable within two to three weeks of daily practice.
⚡ Accuracy First, Then Speed
Every error and backspace costs more time than the speed gained by typing faster. A typist at 50 WPM with 99% accuracy produces more correct output per minute than one at 65 WPM with 90% accuracy. Build accuracy to 97% first, then push speed — the speed gains arrive faster this way.
