The keyboard is divided exactly in half — the left hand owns the left side and the right hand owns the right side. Your left index finger covers columns 4 and 5 (R T F G V B), while your right index finger covers columns 6 and 7 (Y U H J N M). Each of your other eight fingers covers exactly one column.

The most common beginner mistake is using the wrong finger for a key. This causes a chain of errors because every wrong finger means the correct finger is now one position out of place for the next key. Training each finger to own its territory prevents this cascade from ever starting.
