Notion Charts
A chart turns database numbers into a visual graph. Notion builds charts directly from your existing database properties. This removes the need to export data into a separate spreadsheet for visualization.
Why Charts Help
A table of fifty rows of sales numbers takes time to interpret at a glance. A chart shows the same numbers as a shape you can read in seconds. Trends, spikes, and drops become visible instantly instead of hiding inside rows of text.
Table vs Chart for the Same Data
| Format | Time to Spot a Trend |
|---|---|
| Raw Table | Slow, requires scanning every row |
| Chart | Fast, visible at a glance |
Creating a Chart View
Open a database and add a new Chart view from the view options. Choose a chart type, such as bar, line, or donut. Select which property provides the values and which property groups the data.
Chart Types and Their Uses
| Chart Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Bar Chart | Comparing totals across categories |
| Line Chart | Showing change over time |
| Donut Chart | Showing proportions of a whole |
Setting the X-Axis and Y-Axis
The X-axis usually represents a category or a time period, such as Month. The Y-axis usually represents a number, such as Revenue or Task Count. Notion calculates the value automatically using sum, average, or count depending on your chosen setting.
Practical Example: Weekly Task Completion
Build a Tasks database with a Status property and a Completed Date property. Add a bar chart grouping entries by Completed Date and counting how many tasks finished each week. The chart shows productivity trends without any manual counting.
Practical Example: Budget Breakdown
Build an Expenses database with a Category property and an Amount property. Add a donut chart summing Amount and grouping by Category. The chart instantly shows which category consumes the largest share of the budget.
Filtering a Chart
A chart view accepts the same filters as any other database view. Filter a chart to show only the current quarter's data instead of the full history. This keeps the visual focused on the period that matters for a current review.
