Notion Version History
Version history records past versions of a page as it changes over time. It lets you view or restore an older version if something goes wrong. This feature acts as a safety net for accidental edits or deletions.
Why Version History Matters
A shared page can be edited by several people at once. Someone might delete an important section by accident during a quick edit. Version history lets you undo that damage even after closing the page and returning later.
Opening Page History
Click the three dots menu on any page and select Page History. Notion shows a timeline of saved versions, usually organized by date and time. Click any past version to preview exactly how the page looked at that moment.
Page History Timeline Example
| Version | Date and Time | Edited By |
|---|---|---|
| Current | Today, 3:45 PM | You |
| Previous | Today, 1:10 PM | Team Member |
| Earlier | Yesterday, 9:00 AM | You |
Restoring a Previous Version
Open the version you want to bring back and click Restore This Version. Notion replaces the current page content with the selected historical version. The action itself becomes a new entry in the history, so nothing is ever truly lost.
How Far Back History Goes
The free plan keeps a limited window of recent history, often around seven days. Paid plans extend this window significantly, with some tiers offering unlimited history. Teams handling important documents benefit from a paid plan specifically for this longer retention.
History Retention by Plan Type
| Plan Tier | Typical History Window |
|---|---|
| Free | Short window, around 7 days |
| Paid Plans | Extended or unlimited history |
Version History vs Manual Backups
Version history covers accidental edits and small mistakes on individual pages. A manual export backup protects against larger issues, such as losing access to the workspace entirely. Use both together for the strongest protection of your important content.
Practical Example: Recovering a Deleted Section
Notice a section of a shared document has disappeared during a team meeting. Open Page History and scan backward until you find the version with the section intact. Restore that version, then reapply any legitimate changes made after that point.
