Notion Interface
The Notion interface has three main zones. Each zone controls a different part of your workspace. Learning these zones speeds up your daily work and removes the guesswork from finding a feature.
The Three Zones
| Zone | Location | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Sidebar | Left side | Navigate between pages |
| Content Area | Center | View and edit the open page |
| Top Bar | Top of content area | Share, comment, and manage page settings |
The Sidebar
The sidebar lists your pages in a vertical menu. It shows shared pages, private pages, and templates. Click any page name to open it in the content area. The sidebar stays visible as you move between pages, which keeps navigation consistent.
Sidebar Sections
- Search bar for finding pages fast
- Home button for your dashboard
- Private section for personal pages
- Shared section for team pages
- Teamspaces for group projects
The Content Area
The content area shows the page you selected. You type directly into this space. Text appears as blocks that you can format, move, or delete. This is where the majority of your daily work happens.
The content area resizes based on your screen. On a wide monitor, Notion adds side margins to keep line length readable. This design choice prevents long lines of text from becoming hard to follow.
The Top Bar
The top bar sits above the content area. It holds a Share button for inviting people. It holds a Comment icon for adding feedback. It holds three dots for page settings like Move to Trash or Duplicate.
Top Bar Icons Explained
| Icon | Function |
|---|---|
| Star | Add the page to Favorites |
| Comment Bubble | Open the comment panel |
| Share | Invite people or publish to the web |
| Three Dots | Access page settings, history, and export |
The Slash Command
Typing a forward slash inside any page opens a command menu. This menu lists every block type you can insert. It works like a shortcut list that saves you from clicking through menus. Expert users rely on the slash command instead of the mouse for almost every insert action.
Example Slash Commands
| Command | Inserts |
|---|---|
| /heading | A heading block |
| /table | A table block |
| /image | An image block |
| /todo | A checkbox task |
| /toggle | A collapsible toggle block |
| /callout | A highlighted callout box |
Quick Find
Quick Find opens with a keyboard shortcut and a search icon in the sidebar. It searches every page in your workspace by title and content. This feature saves time when your workspace grows large. Typing a partial word still returns matching pages, so you rarely need the exact title.
The Right-Click Menu
Right-clicking a block opens a context menu with quick actions. This menu offers copy, delete, duplicate, and color options in one place. Using this menu speeds up repetitive editing tasks compared to clicking through the six-dot handle each time.
Interface Practice Checklist
- Open Quick Find and search for a page by a partial word
- Insert a heading, a table, and a callout using the slash command
- Star a page to add it to Favorites
- Open the three-dot menu on a page to see available settings
