File Explorer is the tool you use to find, open, move, and manage every file and folder on your computer. Think of it as a big filing cabinet — everything stored on your computer lives inside it.

How to Open File Explorer

Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer immediately. You can also click the folder icon on the Taskbar.

Parts of File Explorer

  • Navigation Pane (left) – Shows folders like This PC, Documents, Downloads
  • Content Area (right) – Shows files and folders inside the selected folder
  • Address Bar (top) – Shows the path (location) of the folder you are viewing
  • Search Box – Type a file name to find it quickly

The address bar shows each folder you went through. Each › means you went one level deeper.

Changing the View

You can see files as large icons, small icons, or a list. Click the View menu in File Explorer to choose. Large Icons view is helpful for images; List view is helpful for documents.

  • Navigation Pane – Left side panel that shows main folder shortcuts
