The Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin sits on the desktop. When you delete a file, it moves here first. The file is not gone — it waits in the Recycle Bin until you empty it or restore it.

🗑️ Recycle Bin — Full vs Empty

🗑️
FULL Recycle Bin
Contains deleted files
They are still recoverable
🗑️
EMPTY Recycle Bin
All files deleted forever
Cannot be recovered

How to Restore a File from the Recycle Bin

You restore a file when you realise you deleted it by mistake. Restoring sends the file back to the folder it came from.

StepAction
1Double-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop to open it
2Find the file you want back
3Right-click the file
4Click Restore — the file returns to its original folder

How to Empty the Recycle Bin

Emptying the Recycle Bin removes files permanently. Do this when you are sure you no longer need those files. Emptying the bin also frees up storage space on the computer.

MethodSteps
Right-click iconRight-click the Recycle Bin icon → click Empty Recycle Bin → confirm Yes
From inside the binOpen Recycle Bin → click Empty Recycle Bin at the top → confirm Yes

⚠️ Important Rule

Always check the Recycle Bin before emptying it. Once emptied, the files are gone forever and cannot be recovered.

Example: The Recycle Bin is like a dustbin at home. You throw something away (delete). Before the rubbish collector comes (empty bin), you can still take it back out (restore). After the collector takes it — it is gone.
