Save & Print a Document
Saving your document keeps your work safe. If you close Word without saving, everything you typed disappears forever. Always save often while working.
Saving a Document for the First Time
- Press Ctrl + S — or click File → Save As.
- A dialog box appears. Choose a folder (like Documents).
- Type a name for your file in the File Name box.
- Click the Save button.
Ctrl+S saves to disk. Ctrl+P sends document to the printer.
Save vs Save As
Save (Ctrl+S) updates the same file you already saved before. Save As (F12) lets you save a copy with a new name or in a different folder — perfect when you want to keep the original and create a new version.
Printing a Document
- Press Ctrl + P — or click File → Print.
- Choose the printer from the list.
- Set how many copies you need.
- Click Print.
Print Preview
Before printing, Word shows a Print Preview — a picture of exactly how the page will look on paper. Check the preview first to avoid wasting paper if something looks wrong.
🟢 Tip: Press Ctrl + S every few minutes while working. This habit protects your work from power cuts and accidental closure.
💡 Fun Fact: The floppy disk icon 💾 is still used as the "Save" symbol in almost every software — even though most people today have never touched a real floppy disk!
