Intro to MS Excel
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program. It organises numbers and text into a grid of rows and columns. Excel makes calculations fast and helps you create charts and tables.
What is a Spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet is a document made of a grid. The grid has rows (going across) and columns (going up and down). Each small box in the grid is called a cell.
Excel grid: Columns (A, B, C...) × Rows (1, 2, 3...) = Cells.
Active Cell = B3 (Column B, Row 3) — highlighted green.
What Can You Do with Excel?
📊Store marksList subject marks in a table
🧮CalculateAdd, subtract totals automatically
📈ChartsTurn numbers into bar or pie charts
📋ListsKeep shopping lists, schedules
💰BudgetTrack income and spending
The Name Box
The Name Box in the top-left corner shows the address of the selected cell (e.g., B3). The address is the column letter + row number. Click the Name Box and type a cell address to jump directly to that cell.
💡 Fun Fact: A single Excel spreadsheet can hold over 1 million rows and 16,000 columns. That is enough space for more data than most people will ever need!
