Font & Formatting
Formatting changes the way text looks. You can make text bigger, change its colour, or make it bold. Good formatting makes a document easier to read and more attractive.
What is a Font?
A font is a design style for letters. "Arial" looks clean and simple. "Times New Roman" looks more formal. "Comic Sans" looks playful. Each font gives a different mood to the text.
Different fonts give different looks to the same text
Basic Formatting Options
Italic — leans the text to the right. Use for titles of books.
Underline — draws a line under text. Use for important words.
Large Font Size (18pt) — bigger text for headings.
Coloured Text — adds colour using the Font Color button.
Highlighted Text — yellow background like a marker pen.
Formatting Shortcuts
Ctrl + B — Bold | Ctrl + I — Italic | Ctrl + U — Underline
Select text first, then press the shortcut. Press it again to turn the formatting off.
Font Size
Font size is measured in points (pt). Body text in a letter usually uses 12pt. Headings use 16pt or larger. Children's books use 14–18pt for easy reading.
Font sizes in points — the bigger the number, the larger the text
Text Alignment
Alignment decides where text lines up on the page. Left align is most common for paragraphs. Centre align is used for titles and headings. Right align is used for dates or signatures. Justify spreads text evenly across the full line width.
