Windows Desktop
When you start a Windows computer, the first screen you see is called the Desktop. The desktop is like your workspace — you open apps and files from here.
Parts of the Desktop
Every Windows desktop has the same main parts. Learning each part helps you work faster.
A typical Windows Desktop: Background, Icons, Open Window, and Taskbar
🖥 DesktopThe main screen area where icons sit.
🗂 IconsSmall pictures that open apps or files when you double-click.
🪟 WindowsBoxes that open when you launch a program.
📌 TaskbarThe bar at the bottom with the Start button and open apps.
⊞ Start ButtonOpens the menu to find any app.
Working with Windows (Boxes)
Every open program lives inside a rectangle called a window. The top bar of the window is the Title Bar. It shows the program name.
Three Control Buttons
Every window has three buttons in the top-right corner. The red × button closes the window. The orange – button minimises the window (hides it to the taskbar). The green □ button maximises the window (makes it full screen).
💡 Fun Fact: You can move any window by clicking its title bar and dragging it to a new position on the screen!
